Happy Thanksgiving! And see you on Plaid Friday!

A few scheduling changes next week—normal hours Tuesday, Saturday, and Sunday, but Yarn Folk will close a couple of hours early on Wednesday, will be closed on Thanksgiving, and will open an hour early on Plaid Friday.

Don’t forget that Thursday, December 6, is Holiday Girls Night Out—join downtown merchants for treats, specials, raffles, and more. Once again, the Ellensburg Downtown Association is sponsoring free bus transportation from Yakima. Call the EDA at (509) 962-6246 to reserve your place on the bus.

Wonderful Wallaby

November 7, 14, 28, & December 5, 5:00pm-7:00pm | in progress | Ann Miner

The Wonderful Wallaby is the knitted version of a classic hooded sweatshirt. It is knit in the round from the bottom up until the hood, which is knit back and forth. The stitches for the pouch pocket are picked up from the body, and knit back and forth. Sleeve shaping is done via raglan decreases. Sizing is child’s size 2-12.

Prerequisites: You should be comfortable casting on, knitting, purling, and casting off, and should be familiar with a method for knitting small tubes—double points, two circulars, or magic loop.

Anthology KAL

November 2, 9, 16, 23, 5:00pm-7:00pm | Materials only [IN PROGRESS, but feel free to join us any time!]

We’ll be using the free Anthology pattern from Tin Can Knits to design unique colorwork hats or cowls. Just like the Strange Brew sweater recipe, Anthology offers a wide variety of sizes, and three gauge options. Held in the knitalong format, there will be no charge to participate beyond purchase of materials.

Above: I’m thinking of doing a fingering weight hat using the Knitted Wit Smarties with a main color. It’s great fun to play around with a bunch of different combinations!

Prerequisites: You should be comfortable knitting, purling, casting on, and binding off. If you don’t have previous experience with two-color knitting, plan for adventure—help will be available, but this knitalong is not a formal class.

Project Circle

Washted is a brand-new yarn base from Malabrigo—they describe it as “a superwash versio of the classic Worsted Merino base. While remaining true to the original softness of Worsted, we ‘washed it’ so you can too, allowing more freedom and ease of care.” Recommended care is machine wash gentle, dry flat. And as you can see, the colors are rich, deep, and many of them are completely new. See below for a preview of how one of them (Selva Peruana) knits up!

...to inspire

Originating in Oakland, CA, “The name Plaid Friday was conceived from the idea of weaving the individual threads of small businesses together to create a strong fabric that celebrates the diversity and creativity of independent businesses. Plaid Friday is the relaxing and enjoyable alternative to the big box store Black Friday,’ and is designed to promote both local and independently owned businesses during the holidays. “

Join merchants throughout downtown Ellensburg as we celebrate our vibrant community, and kick off the holiday season.

At Yarn Folk, wear a bit of plaid and enjoy 10% off your purchase! Additionally, if you purchase 2-3 skeins of worsted weight yarn, you’ll receive a copy of either the Yukon Campfire Hat or the Mad for Plaid Hats.

Plymouth Yarn is again partnering with local yarn shops to offer our customers a nice incentive to #shopsmall on Small Business Saturday. We have coupons for the first 20 customers which will be worth a $10 credit on a $50 purchase. Previously, the coupon was good for a future purchase; this year, it is good for your Small Business Saturday purchase!

Many of our favorite yarns are eligible for this promotion—Encore, Galway, Galway Sport, Merino Textura, Select DK Merino Superwash and more!

I knew you would want to see what the new Malabrigo Washted looks like knit up, and the Oats cowl from Tin Can Knits’ The Simple Collection is a fantastic pattern for new-ish knitters (and anyone who loves a quick and elegant knit). I used one skein for the shorter cowl; the longer option would take two, and can be doubled.

West Portal Cowl

The West Portal Cowl with its easy-to-memorize four-row texture pattern combined with half-brioche was a quick knit, and yielded an incredibly soft and lightweight cowl long enough to be worn double. It’s a great use for a single skein of Plymouth Aireado, but if you wanted to inject a bit of bling into this project, you could also use three skeins of Schulana Luxair Print.
